What are the benefits of using cued speech?
✔️ Children can get exposed to phonetics just like hearing peers do before explicitly teaching how to read and write. Lack of exposure to phonetics is an extreme disadvantage to deaf children. Literacy is that much more important as it’s their main source of learning information, access to entertainment, and communicating with others. Literacy often represents individuals who are deaf in terms of communication as they are often required to use written language to communicate with people who don’t know sign.
✔️ You can cue any language or accent.
✔️ It’s easier to present complex information that would otherwise require a lot of finger spelling, like learning chemistry or presenting a English phrase/idiom that would’ve presented in a different way. Deaf children are often not exposed to these English phrases “It’s raining cats and dogs”. It would be just emphasized while signing “rain” to indicate heavy rain and their only exposure to this might be when they read it in a book or on TV.
✔️ it can be learned quickly. Once you learn the system, it just takes practice before it becomes a motor pattern. For example, it’s like learning to type on a keyboard.

Disadvantages:
❌ Not many people know and use Cued Speech
❌ Not every child can pick it up, especially when their is an underlying cognitive impairment.

Now I wouldn’t recommend this to replace learning ASL, I think it’s a wonderful tool for learning phonetics and English nuances. I wish it were used more frequently in the education system for deaf and hard of hearing children.
